Karabiner-Elements provides a subset of the features planned for the next generation Karabiner for macOS Sierra. The current version of Karabiner does not work with Sierra, so Karabiner-Elements was created to keep Sierra users up and running until a new version of Karabiner is published.

Project Status

Karabiner-Elements is ready to use today. It provides a useful subset of Karabiner's features that you can begin using immediately.

Features

  • Secure Keyboard Entry: Support secure entry in the Terminal, Password prompt etc.
  • Modifier Flag Sync: Synchronize modifier flags across all connected keyboards.
  • Simple Modifications: Map normal keys to arbitrary key functions.

Limitations

  • Karabiner-Elements cannot modify eject key due to the limitation of macOS API.
  • Karabiner-Elements ignores the System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys.. configuration.

How to build

System requirements:

  • OS X 10.11+
  • Xcode 8+
  • Command Line Tools for Xcode
  • Boost 1.61.0+ (header-only) http://www.boost.org/

To install the Boost requirement, download the latest Boost release, open the boost folder inside of it, and move all of the files there into /opt/local/include/boost/.

(For example, the version.hpp should be located in /opt/local/include/boost/version.hpp)

Step 1: Getting source code

Clone the source from github.

Step 2: Building a package

cd Karabiner-Elementsmake

The make script will create a redistributable Karabiner-Elements-VERSION.dmg in the current directory.

Installation and Use
Karabiner Elements is a lightweight application, but it packs a wide array of functions that can change the basic functioning of your MacOS desktop or laptop. Be aware that after installing it you also need to add it to the list of the applications that can take control over your Mac. You can do so by opening your System Preferences and adding it to the list of apps in Security & Privacy tab.
After this is done, the app will appear in your status bar with a small icon that describes currently loaded profile. Clicking on profile name will open a drop-down menu with the list of the currently available profiles, shortcut to the Preferences screen, app updater and the shortcut to the EventViewer service that can help you check if the various shortcut settings are actually effective inside your specific applications. Profiles can be switched either via status bar menu or with the custom keyboard shortcuts. In the Preferences window, you can create new Profiles in the MenuBar tab, and set up the exact keymapping rules, key repeat timing, and status messages.
